Weekly Progress - May 28, '23

My method of weight loss is essentially:

  • Track my calories
  • Exercise as much as i can sustain
  • Set a weekly weight loss goal in my calorie tracker that is in line with my bigger goal

The calorie tracker i use is MyFitnessPal - precisely because I’ve used it in the past and it both works well enough and is familiar.

My main forms of exercise are swimming (currently 3 times a week), walking, and lifting weights. Sometimes i try and go for a run but I’m dealing with a nagging injury so its not usually very productive (more on this in another post).

One funny quirk I’ve encountered is that MyFitnessPal needs to estimate your baseline caloric expenditure. In other words how much fuel you burn just going about your day. So it asks your weight and then “activity level”. If you sit at a desk all day then you burn less calories in a day than if you’re stocking grocery shelves.

The funny part is i didn’t change whatever i had. I think “lightly active”, from my previous stint using MFP. It felt right as i feel like I mostly sit or putter around the house these days. But after a few days tracking calories and blowing way past my daily budget out of a raw hunger, and still losing weight faster than the goal timeline, I clearly need to adjust. I guess being awake a few extra hours than “normal” and also carrying or bouncing around a baby burns more calories than sitting on Zoom calls.

Anyway, ending the week at 100.4 kg. However I have a couple little trips coming up (currently sitting in Tofino) that are going to be challenging to keep managing weight on.
