My method of weight loss is essentially: Track my calories Exercise as much as i can sustain Set a weekly weight loss goal in my calorie tracker that is in line with my bigger goal The calorie tracker i use is MyFitnessPal - precisely because I’ve used it in the past and it both works well enough and is familiar. My main forms of exercise are swimming (currently 3 times a week), walking, and lifting weights.

First Goal

My first goal is to just drop some damned weight. If I get fitter, stronger, faster or anything else along the way that’s cool and all. But loss of mass is the main goal. I somewhat arbitrarily picked an event I plan to attend in September as my time horizon for this. I then completely arbitrarily picked a goal weight of 91.9 kg (aka: below 92 kg). This is based on previously having a triathlon racing weight of about 88 kg and so backing that off a bit.

Introduction

I’ve always kinda hated the term “dad bod”. I don’t know when I first heard it but it was at some point in adulthood well before any realistic notion of me being a dad existed. I doubt there’s any exactly shared definition of “dad bod” but Urban Dictionary sums it up poignantly: “Dad bod” is a male body type that is best described as “softly round.” It’s built upon the theory that once a man has found a mate and fathered a child, he doesn’t need to worry about maintaining a sculpted physique.

I’m a day late posting this week’s update because normally I do this at night while the little guy is napping on me before bed. But last night we tried switching things up and I went to bed early. It was mind blowing going to bed before I felt like I was about to collapse! Anyway, lemme reflect on last week. We went away to Hornby which meant I both didn’t have my scale and also had less control over food.

It was kind of an odd week. Monday and Tuesday we were in Tofino, and I didn’t track calories or weigh in. I also didn’t exercise as much as normal but probably walked more than normal. So on Wednesday morning when I could weigh in again I didn’t know what to expect. But I’d done well and continued the trend of dropping weight. On Friday I weighed in at 99.6 kg - which is a milestone of dropping 2 kg since starting!
